Musical Component Robot

Musical Component Robot » image 2

A “musical component robot” that plays records, CDs and DVDs while looking impressively stylish.

The venerable Italian brand Brionvega thinks the 60s and 70s are worth bringing back, or that at least some of the design sensibilities of the era warrant new life. The classic, groundbreaking Radiofonografio, divined in 1965 by two of the three Castiglioni brothers, Pier Giacomo and Achille, is making a new entrance as RR226. In 1965, the “musical component robot” was a home electronic marvel that in one sleekly designed device included a radio, amplifiers and a record player (for both 45s and 33s).

Why speakers are called what they are.

Speak-er is a playful speaker design by Sherwood Forlee that puts the SPEAK back into Speakers. A speaker is a device that converts electrical energy into sound waves. It’s also someone who expresses in language.

Otto Spy Speaker

Otto Spy Speaker » image 1

Every object and surface in our environment has a whisper; subtle tremors and vibrations that are usually undetectable to the human ear, produced by the activity and movement of daily life.

What if these sounds were audible? How would that change our aural awareness, perception of space and attitude towards objects? Would it be possible to ‘compose’ our own soundtrack using our walls and objects as a new form of instruments? Madsounds is a proposal for a different appreciation of our environment, space and objects by making it possible to identify, combine and manipulate these sounds.

The Otto may look like one of those suction cup gadgets that turns any surface into a sound generating speaker, but it’s actually more like a stethoscope than a speaker. If you latch it onto a window, a wall or a glass of ice water, you can hear “subtle tremors and vibrations.

Noisy Instrument by Jun Murakoshi » image 1

What has not been done by using rapid prototyping technique? My answer is making sounds. It must be difficult to make music but it could be possible to make noise.
