Glo Pillow

Glo Pillow » image 6

The glo Pillow is an alternative to the traditional alarm clock. It was designed with teammate Eoin McNally in response to a brief to create a product which helps to combat the pressures of a “24 hour” lifestyle.

The pillow uses an LED fabric substrate below the surface to wake the user using light. This substrate also functions as a display, showing the time on the pillows surface using the grid of LEDs below.

YOM Alarm Clock With MP3 Player » image 1

Here is the YOM, your typical clock radio alarm with an atypical USB dock for your MP3 player. Instead of waking up to the radio or some blaring noise, why not plug your USB stick loaded with your favorite tunes? You can set which songs to wake up to via the touch sensitive controls.

Designer Miquel Mora looks at the new techniques of printing electronics and wonders “What if we could ‘enhance’ paper instead of getting rid of it? What if we could merge the printed world with the digital one?” He says “Through printed electronics we can create processors, displays, batteries on flat and flexible surfaces like paper.

Da Vinci Alarm Clock

Da Vinci Alarm Clock » image 1

The Da Vinci Alarm Clock works on a very basic system. The Dot Matrix display will always show either Sleep or Awake. When the product is first switched on the display will immediately show the word Awake. This will continue to be displayed for 3 hours at 30 minutes.
At this point the clock display will change to show the word Sleep
and a high-pitched alarm will signal this change in state. This will continue to sound until the user presses the alarm-reset button. The word sleep will continue to be shown for the next 30 minutes, at which point the display will revert back to show the word awake, the alarm will also sound at this point to signal that a change in state has occurred.

Glo Pillow Gently Wakes You In 40 Minutes

Glo Pillow Gently Wakes You In 40 Minutes » image 1

This project aims to design a better and more natural way of being woken than the alarm clock, which is a very violent and intrusive method that disrupts sleep patterns and can induce a ‘fight or flight’ reaction. The ‘glo pillow’ uses an integrated fabric interface for setting the alarm. The time is displayed on the surface of the pillow using an LED grid inside the pillow. The user goes to sleep and passes through the five sleep stages to REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Forty five minutes before the alarm is due to activate, the pillow begins to glow. The light intensity increases gradually from 0 lux to 250 lux and simulates a natural sunrise. At the set time the light emitted is sufficient to wake the body naturally - a positive and calming start to the day.
