• Apple unveil new iPod Touch - an iPod with a touchscreen interface (on sale September 28th)

• Revamped iPod Nano also gets a makeover with video access - (available now)

Apple has unveiled the latest version of its iPod - featuring wireless internet access and a web browser.

Users will be able to download music and videos on to the gadget - called the iPod touch - without plugging it into their computer.

It also comes with a 3.5in widescreen display.

Based on Apple’s popular iPhone, but without the mobile phone function, it uses touchscreen technology instead of buttons and dials.

The music player goes on sale in the US this weekend but UK shoppers will have to wait until at least the end of the month to get their hands on one.

It is Apple’s first iPod with wireless internet access. The WiFi connection makes it faster at surfing the web than mobile phones.

The new iPod will be linked up to Apple’s iTunes store, allowing owners to preview and download millions of songs.

It will almost certainly be one of the leading presents demanded by children - and adults - at Christmas.

The eight-gigabyte model costs £199. A version with twice that storage capacity - 16 gigabytes - costs £269.

Unveiling the product on a video link from San Francisco in California, Steve Jobs, the boss of Apple, said: “It’s one of the seven wonders of the world - it’s just incredible.

“The iPod touch is a landmark iPod, ushering in a whole new generation of features based on its revolutionary multi-touch interface and built-in wifi wireless networking.

“People are going to be amazed at how thin it is and how much it does. Some others have tried to install wifi on similar devices but have failed.

“We think we know what to do to make it successful where others have failed.”

Mr Jobs unveiled a string of new designs and modifications to the existing range of iPods, which some analysts said had started looking out of date.

The iPod nano has been revamped to allow users to watch videos and play a variety of games including sudoku.

It goes on sale today in five different colours at £99 for the four-gigabyte model.

The eight-gigabyte version will cost £129.

Although the devices represent a fusion of cutting-edge design and the latest technology, doubts remain as to whether consumers will want to watch movies and recorded television shows on a handheld device.

The original iPod, which came on to the market five years ago, has been updated to hold up to 40,000 songs or 200 hours of videos.

Dubbed the iPod classic this model is now in its sixth generation and is going on sale for £159 or £229.

“The first iPod put 1,000 songs in your pocket - this new iPod classic can put 40,000 songs in your pocket,” said Mr Jobs.

“With a thinner all-metal enclosure and an enhanced user interface, the iPod classic is ideal for people who want to hold everything on their iPod.”

The latest developments are being seen as the company’s attempt to maintain sales over the crucial Christmas period.

Apple is facing constant pressure to reinvent itself, not least because of the intense competition from technology rivals such as Microsoft.

In a bid to woo Christmas shoppers, the company has slashed the price of its eight-gigabyte iPhone from £600 to £400.

The device is, however, still only available in the US.

The iPod touch has a battery life of 22 hours when playing music and five hours with video.

16 gig… I’ll wait until at least the 80 gig version comes out. If all it did was play music, sure that would be enough, but it does so much more and videos will gobble those gigs up pretty quickly.

This Touch is a beautiful product. Lots of complains about the memory size though. One issue I have is that they didn’t include the Email application. I think an option for some is to simply buy an iPhone and blow off AT&T (meaning don’t activate it). Then you got the best Touch + email and a calendar that accepts input.
